HEAD LICE
Question: Will my child be sent home if he/she has lice? Answer: No, parents are required to pick up their child if head lice is found during the school day, however students are not allowed to return to school until they have treated, completed a Head Lice Checklist, inspected by the school nurse or appointee, and there are no louse (live crawling bugs) present. Question: Will I be notified if another student in my child's class has lice? Answer: No. Although head lice is a nuisance, it is not a health threat. Question: Does school nurse perform class head checks when a student in the class has lice? Answer: No. Question: Why does my child keep getting head lice? Answer: In many cases, children are not repeatedly getting head lice. What may seem like a re-infestation, is a continuation of the initial infestation. It is extremely important when treating head lice that you not only kill the louse (crawling bugs), but remove nits (lice eggs). If all nits are not removed, they have the potential to grow, hatch, and produce more louse. Question: Where can I find more information on head lice? Answer: There are many resources available with head lice information, however Rock Hill School nurses follow the recommendations of SC DHEC and the American Academy of Pediatrics. MEDICATIONS Question: Can I send cough drops and chap stick to school with my child? Answer: No.Cough drops and some lip balms (depending on active ingredient) are considered medications. Elementary school students are not allowed to carry any medications at school. Please refer to the Rock Hill School District Medication Policy. |
